Peace in a Stressful World

Medical research shows that stress causes chemical changes in the brain, and these changes can influence the state of your well-being. During times of extreme stress the adrenal glands release adrenaline, a hormone that activates our body’s defense system. It could trigger headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety, etc.

In the world in which we live, how can we eliminate this extreme stress on our bodies? The Bible states in Isaiah 26:3,

You will keep perfectly peaceful the one whose mind remains focused on You....

Christ is our peace and His Word brings us peace; His presence brings us peace. A friend of mine, Chaplain Rebecca Mastriano, says that when she is in a stressful environment, she puts on her ipod and listens to praise music and immediately her environment becomes more peaceful.

Psalms 22 tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people; as we worship, pray and praise God our stress level will become less and we will have more peace no matter what our situation.

Philippians 4:8 admonishes us:

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Through Christ we can relieve much of our stress that can bring about disease.
