Determination of an Athlete

by Tabitha Rudge Smith

An athlete in training is one of the most dedicated and motivated persons you will meet. As a former athlete, I remember the days of training and the vigorous work required. No matter how tired I was or even if I didn’t feel like it, I would train and run because I loved my sport and I wanted to keep improving my ability.

First Timothy 4:7 - 8 says,

“…train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

A person does not become a great athlete without training, just like we can’t become godly without training. Look once again at the end of verse 7, “train yourself to be godly.”

Dedicate yourself to godliness with the same determination as an athlete would train for his or her sport. Your reward in heaven will be much greater than the reward an athlete receives here on earth.
